aromatherapy for productivity

We're in the midst of hardcore flu season in Minnesota. Add to that seemingly endless cold and dark nights, and it can feel a little oppressive out in the elements. But luckily for us, we're hardy people in l'etoile du nord, and we've got a host of things to help us get through winter.

In addition to dreams for spring, we've got awesome hygge-inducing brands like Faribault Woolen Mill and Minnetonka Moccasin. We definitely know to take our Vitamin D and get out when the sun's out for skiing, snowshoeing and more.

But the worst part of the winter months isn't how to make the most of the weather. It's dealing with having to go in to work and deal with the weather. There's a kind of inherent despondency in walking in to work when it's dark, and leaving to find it dark again. If you have windows or the luxury of leaving during the day, you get to at least see the sun. But in my basement office--the dark toe of the sock, if you will--it can be suffocating.

One way that I bring a little boost to my days is with aromatherapy. I have a small diffuser in my space and a selection of oils to help boost...well, whatever needs boosting. It is possible to increase productivity with essential oils; here's some of my favorite concoctions backed by science.

Increasing Concentration

  • Rosemary Associated with memory since the time of the ancient Egyptians!

  • Grapefruit Shifts blocked energy and relieves the tension and stress associated with performance anxiety. Just one sniff can give you an instant revitalization.

  • Eucalyptus The signature scent of cold medicine the world over, eucalyptus has a calming, cooling emotional effect.

Clear Your Mind

  • Peppermint Not only will cooling peppermint soothe what ails you, it also inspires enthusiasm. It's said to also be good for those in the throes of apathy.

  • Sweet Fennel Fennel is a bit of an acquired taste, but the scent is said to help the mind adjust and assuage boredom.

  • Cardamom One of my favorite spices and essential oils, cardamom is soothing yet spicy. It helps to refocus the mind and energy.

Authentic Listening

  • Frankincense Stop zoning out with earthy, woodsy frankincense essential oil. Some say that it can help you achieve higher consciousness; I'd settle for a still mind.

  • Vetiver

New to me. Vetiver is distilled from roots and grounds energy; it sounds ideal for those with vata imbalances who desire to be more present.

  • Ylang Ylang Another of my faves. It's one I frequently use in my diffuser, but never with this combination. Ylang ylang calms the heart and eases the mind; it's supposed to also drastically improve attentiveness.

Regardless of where you're located, bringing in a variety of scents into your workspace can stir up your dormant wells of creativity and innovation.

What are some of your favorite essential oils for aromatherapy and productivity?
